Abstract
In this tutorial, the SDL design pattern approach, a method for the systematical, reuse-driven development of communication systems, is surveyed and then applied rigorously and in detail to the incremental design of a typical communication system. The approach builds on generic pieces of solutions that have proven useful in previous projects. These generic solutions . termed SDL design patterns . support reuse-driven design of communication systems, raise the vocabulary of protocol engineers to a problem-oriented level, assist the discovery and exploitation of commonalities, and lead to well-justified designs. Following its application, results and experiences obtained with the SDL design pattern approach are summarized, and industrial transfer activities are presented.
